The Source of Genuine and Lasting Happiness

While traveling in a car with a group of friends, we happened to follow a public utility bus with an adage on its bumper which says, “Selfish people are never happy. For all they want they get, except true happiness.” I pondered on what we read and realized that indeed all people are searching for happiness but most of us do it in a wrong way. We have a notion that if we can have all the things we want, achieve all the success we desire, accumulate all the riches this world offers, and the like; then we will be happy. Though some of these things are not really evil per se, they all fall short in giving people real happiness. We hear the news and read the papers: almost the same story of people whom the world considered achievers and have reached the pinnacle of success in their various fields but sadly ended up their lives empty, miserable, depressed, unhappy, etc.

I've watched the news years back about a well-known professional World Wrestling champion who lived prosperously due to his successful career. He had all the things he wanted and lived in a colossal and gorgeous house but was found dead one day. The news speculated that he hung himself. To make the situation worst, he was the primary suspect to the death of his own wife and his seven years old son!

Another celebrity was recently been released from prison because she was caught driving while drunk. Furthermore, couple of months ago, a famous person in Hollywood died of drug abuse. The news said that she became desperate after the death of her eldest son. These stories are not new to us nowadays because one way or another, we often hear them over the radio, read them in the newspapers, surf them on the internet and watch them in our televisions. Sadly, these do not bother us anymore. I suppose this is due to our busy schedule in searching for our own happiness and satisfaction.

Why do things happen this way? Why do lots of people end their lives prematurely and miserably though outwardly they look like they have everything that we think would make people happy? I believe it is because we fall short of the understanding of the source of genuine and lasting happiness. Yes, I believe that genuine and lasting happiness is found only in having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ – the Son of God. He alone can give meaning to our existence, the reason why we are here in the first place. God in His Word the Bible, reveals to us how mankind can have lasting joy, peace and unending happiness, not only in this life but in the one to come.
